The Weirdest Motorcycle Facts That Will Surprise You

March 28, 2025

Motorcycles have a long and fascinating history, full of strange engineering quirks, record-breaking feats, and surprising innovations. Whether you're a lifelong rider or new to the motorcycle world, there are plenty of odd facts that make these machines even more interesting.

At Prime Motorcycles, we know motorcycles inside and out—not just how to repair and maintain them, but also the unbelievable stories behind their history and development. Here are some of the weirdest motorcycle facts that might just surprise you.

1. The First Motorcycle Had Training Wheels

The very first motorcycle, the Daimler Reitwagen, was built in 1885 by Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach. Unlike modern motorcycles, this one had two small stabilizing wheels on each side, essentially making it a motorized bicycle with training wheels. Despite its awkward design, this invention laid the groundwork for the motorcycles we ride today.

2. Some Motorcycles Can Ride on Water

While motorcycles are designed for roads, some riders have figured out how to make them work on water, too. In 2015, stunt rider Robbie Maddison modified a dirt bike with custom skis and paddle tires to literally ride on top of ocean waves in Tahiti. Known as "Pipe Dream," the stunt remains one of the most impressive motorcycle feats ever performed.

3. Diesel Motorcycles Exist—And They Get Incredible Mileage

Most motorcycles run on gasoline, but some are designed to run on diesel fuel. Diesel motorcycles, like the Royal Enfield Taurus, are known for their fuel efficiency and durability, often getting over 100 miles per gallon. While they’re rare, they prove that motorcycles can be just as fuel-efficient as they are fast.

4. There’s a World Record for the Most People on a Single Motorcycle

How many people do you think can fit on a motorcycle? If you guessed more than 50, you'd be right. In 2017, a team of 58 people in India set the world record for the most riders on a single motorcycle. They used a modified Royal Enfield 500cc bike and carefully balanced as many people as possible on it before riding a short distance to set the record.

5. The Fastest Motorcycle in the World Can Outrun Most Supercars

Motorcycles are known for their speed and agility, but did you know that the Kawasaki Ninja H2R is one of the fastest production motorcycles ever built? With a top speed of 250 mph, it’s faster than many high-performance sports cars, making it one of the most extreme street-legal machines ever created.

6. Some Motorcycles Have Been Used in Space Exploration Prototypes

NASA once considered using motorcycles for space exploration. In the 1960s and 1970s, the idea of a lunar motorcycle was explored as a lightweight alternative to the moon rover. While the project never became reality, the thought of astronauts cruising across the moon on motorcycles is still a wild idea to imagine.

7. Motorcycles Can Be More Durable Than Cars—If Properly Maintained

A well-maintained motorcycle can last just as long as a car, if not longer. Some motorcycles have surpassed 500,000 miles, with careful maintenance and proper servicing. Regular oil changes, chain adjustments, and brake inspections can significantly extend a bike’s lifespan, proving that good maintenance is the key to longevity.

8. The Most Expensive Motorcycle Ever Sold Cost Over $11 Million

While motorcycles are generally more affordable than cars, the Neiman Marcus Limited Edition Fighter changed that idea when it sold for $11 million at an auction. This futuristic motorcycle was built with exotic materials and an aggressive design, making it more of a collector's item than a practical ride.

9. Motorcycle Helmets Were Once Considered Unnecessary

In the early days of motorcycling, helmets were not required, and many riders didn’t wear them. It wasn’t until British scientist Hugh Cairns studied motorcycle crash injuries in the 1930s that helmets became widely recognized as a crucial safety measure. Today, they are proven to save lives and are required by law in most states.

10. The World’s Longest Motorcycle Is Over 86 Feet Long

Indian engineer Bharat Sinh Parmar built the longest motorcycle ever, stretching 86 feet and 3 inches. The massive bike featured ten wheels and could still be ridden—although turning it was another story.
